Nobody really talks about this, but it's one of the most common reasons businesses stall.
It's not that the strategy was wrong. It's that it worked and now you've outgrown it.
Here are three signs that's exactly what's happening.
1. You're busier than ever, but your revenue has plateaued.
If you're working the same hours (or more) and the numbers aren't moving, that's a signal. Early on, more effort usually equals more results. But at a certain point, effort stops being the lever approach becomes the lever.
A strategy that relies on you personally doing more has a ceiling.
And you might have hit it.
2. Your best clients are coming from referrals, but you have no idea how to replicate that.
Referrals are brilliant until they're your only source of new business.
If your pipeline depends entirely on who happens to mention your name in conversation, you don't have a growth strategy.
You have a waiting strategy.
That works fine at a certain size. But if you want to grow intentionally and consistently, you need something more deliberate.
3. You've got goals, but no real plan to hit them.
"I want to double revenue this year" is a goal. "Here's how we're going to double revenue this year" is a strategy.
A lot of business owners have the former without the latter.
It's not a motivation problem.
It's a clarity problem.
And it's incredibly common I see it across businesses of all sizes, from brand new start-ups to established companies that have been trading for years.
So what do you do?
First, you acknowledge that the strategy that got you here might not be the one that gets you there.
That's not a failure, it's just growth.
Every stage of business needs a different approach.
Then you figure out what needs to change.
- Sometimes it's your offer.
- Sometimes it's your marketing.
- Sometimes it's how you're spending your time, or the structure you're operating in.
Usually it's a combination.
