I've lost count of the number of times a business owner has come to me and said some version of this:
"Things have just kinda stalled. I don't really know why."
Sometimes they blame the economy. Sometimes their industry. Sometimes they've convinced themselves they need a new website, a rebrand, or a better social media strategy.
And sometimes they're right. But honestly? Most of the time, they're not.
After working with dozens of business owners from start-ups finding their feet to established businesses doing seven figures. The same patterns show up again and again. The market is rarely the real problem. The product usually isn't either.
It’s usually them!
Here's what actually is:
The owner is still running the business like it's year one.
This is the big one.
When you start a business, you have to do everything. You're the salesperson, the admin, the strategist, the tea-maker. That's just the reality. And it works, well, until it doesn't.
At some point, the business grows to a size where that approach stops being scrappy and starts being a ceiling. But a lot of business owners don't notice the shift. They're still the bottleneck in every decision, still saying yes to everything, still the one firefighting every problem that comes up.
They're busy, but the business isn't really moving.
Sound familiar?
There's activity, but no real direction.
Another thing I see constantly is business owners who are doing a lot, like A LOT! Posting on socials, attending networking events, taking on clients, having conversations, all looking good but all normally without a clear idea of where they're actually trying to get to.
Momentum without direction is just exhausting. You can spin plates indefinitely and still end up in the same place twelve months later.
The businesses I see break through stagnation almost always start with the same thing: getting really clear on what they're building towards and working on them, not just what they're doing day to day.
The mindset stuff is getting in the way (even if they'd never call it that).
I know, I know, bear with me on this one.
I'm not talking about woo-woo mindset work (Although I do actually love a bit of woo!). I'm talking about the very practical ways that fear, self-doubt, or old patterns show up in business decisions.
The founder who keeps undercharging because they don't feel confident in their value.
The business owner who won't hire because they're worried about losing control.
The person who keeps starting new things before finishing the last one because the idea phase feels safer than the execution phase.
These aren't personality flaws. They're SO common. But they do quietly hold businesses back in ways that no amount of strategy can fix on its own.
So, what do you do about it?
The good news is that once you can actually see what's creating the stuckness, it's much easier to address. And it usually doesn't require a massive overhaul, it requires the right conversation and a clear plan.
That's normally where I come in.
If any of this resonated and you've been feeling like your business should be further along than it is, I'd love to have a chat.
Not a sales pitch, because mate that is NOT me, just an honest conversation about where you are, where you want to be, and whether I can help you get there.
